Separate potential stock from accessible feed
Magnets in use are not automatically available to a recycler. Product lifetime, collection, disassembly, sorting and contamination affect what can enter a process. Manufacturing scrap and end-of-life material can have different collection and preparation requirements. Record which feed stream the project actually intends to use.
The European Commission's JRC examines critical raw materials in waste streams and recovery opportunities. That research provides context for the distinction between material present in products and a usable recycling input.

Identify what the recycling route produces
A recycler may produce an intermediate, separated material, powder or another product that still needs further manufacturing. Ask what leaves the plant and what downstream steps remain. 'Recycled rare earths' is too broad a label to compare directly with a finished-magnet requirement.
Then check scale and acceptance. A successful pilot can establish valuable technical evidence while leaving feed contracts, continuous operation and customer qualification unresolved. Keep claimed recovery rates tied to the actual feed and test conditions rather than applying them to every possible waste stream.
Illustrative secondary-supply assessment
A region has a large future stock of end-of-life motors, while a recycler plans near-term output. The timing may not match. Investigate the feed available during the plant's initial years and the product its route will deliver. Future waste potential should not silently fill an immediate operating feed requirement.
Follow the recycling chain
| Stage | Question |
|---|---|
| Collection | Which feed is accessible, and when? |
| Processing | What accepted input becomes which output? |
| Customer use | What conversion and qualification remain? |
Your review checklist
- Distinguish manufacturing scrap from end-of-life feed.
- Check collection and feed access evidence.
- Identify the actual output product.
- Keep pilot recovery separate from commercial throughput.

Does recycling eliminate upstream dependency immediately?
Not automatically. Collection, processing inputs, conversion and qualified output can introduce their own constraints.
Can all discarded magnets enter the same process?
Do not assume so. Feed composition, preparation and the process's acceptance requirements need verification.
