Read the claim's boundary
Ask which product, material fraction, period and chain-of-custody basis the claim covers. Recycled rare-earth content is not necessarily the same measure as recycled content by total magnet mass. Keep the publisher's definition attached to the claim rather than shortening it to a broad percentage without context.
Apple's July 2025 MP Materials announcement connects recycled-material development with a customer programme. Such a programme is evidence to investigate at its stated scope, not an automatic measure of uncommitted market volume.
Distinguish circularity from incremental availability
A closed-loop flow can be valuable for a customer's own production while leaving little material available to third parties. To assess incremental supply, investigate accessible feed, achieved output, existing commitments and the conversion route. Avoid adding a recycling capacity figure to primary production without checking whether the inputs and outputs overlap in the analysis.
Keep environmental or certification conclusions separate from the industrial availability question. A public sourcing claim can guide research, but it does not establish every verification or compliance requirement for a buyer's own product.
Illustrative content calculation
A product is described as using recycled rare-earth inputs, but the announcement provides no annual tonnage. The content claim may be meaningful, yet it cannot produce an available-supply estimate. The next questions are what quantity is produced, who can access it and which product specification the route supports.
Three different claims
| Claim | Do not confuse with |
|---|---|
| Recycled content | Total finished-product mass or market volume |
| Recycling capacity | Achieved accepted output |
| Closed-loop programme | Uncommitted supply for other buyers |
Your review checklist
- Preserve the percentage's exact denominator.
- Identify the customer and product scope.
- Check achieved output and commitments separately.
- Avoid double-counting recycled and primary-stage observations.

Does 100% recycled rare-earth content mean the whole magnet is recycled?
Not necessarily. The claim's material denominator must be read explicitly; rare-earth content and total magnet mass are different scopes.
Can a closed loop still improve resilience?
Yes. It can support the participating chain. The extent of the benefit and availability to other buyers require separate evidence.
