Identify the feed the plant is designed to use

Record material form, source, relevant composition and any acceptance conditions disclosed by the operator. A mine, mineral-sands stream, stockpile and recycled feed can present different operating and commercial questions. Geographic proximity alone does not establish compatibility or supply rights.

Iluka describes the Eneabba stockpile and other potential feed sources in its project material. Such disclosures should be separated into current, initial and prospective feed assumptions rather than collapsed into one secured supply pool.

Test quantity, timing and access separately

Quantity requires a matched basis: gross feed, contained rare-earth content and recovered product are different measures. Timing requires the upstream source to be ready when the processor needs it. Access requires a supported commercial or ownership arrangement, not simply a statement that the source exists.

Ask what happens if the preferred source is delayed or its material differs from the test basis. A claimed ability to accept third-party feed can be useful flexibility, but it is not evidence that all alternative sources are technically qualified or commercially secured.

Illustrative feedstock gap

A refinery is under construction and a nearby deposit has a large resource estimate. Without a compatible processing study, extraction timetable and access arrangement, the deposit is a possible source to investigate, not established refinery feed. Record each missing dependency so the project review can focus on the actual bottleneck.

Your review checklist

  • Name the source and material form.
  • Keep gross, contained and recovered quantities separate.
  • Align upstream and processing schedules.
  • Verify access and alternative-feed qualification.

Frequently asked questions

Does proximity prove a feedstock relationship?

No. A nearby deposit may be incompatible, unavailable or at a different development stage. The route needs evidence.

Does third-party feed capability mean secured feed?

No. Capability and access are different findings. A specific source still needs technical and commercial support.
