Start with the recovered product
The University of Birmingham's January 2026 Tyseley announcement describes a facility for magnet separation and recycling involving HyProMag. That named development provides a starting point for research, not a blanket qualification of every recycled magnet product.
Identify whether a proposed supplier offers recovered alloy, powder, a separated chemical or finished magnets. Those outputs enter the chain at different points. A claim about recycling capacity must retain its input or output basis before being compared with conventional magnet manufacturing.

Follow the scrap as carefully as mined feed
Ask what feed the process accepts, how it is collected and which contamination or composition limits apply. Production scrap and end-of-life components are not interchangeable inputs. A regional recycling plant can still depend on feed collected elsewhere or on specialist preparation before the material reaches its main process.
For a customer application, recycled origin does not remove the need for specification, consistency and qualification. Assess the required grade, part geometry and production evidence with the same discipline used for primary material. Environmental claims should have their own boundary and evidence, not be inferred from the word recycled.
Turn interest into a qualification brief
Suppose an illustrative supplier can recover alloy from a known scrap stream but has not shown recurring production of your required magnet grade. The next step is a defined technical and commercial evaluation, not an assumption of immediate substitution. Record the feed requirements, output specification, qualification owner and milestone needed before including the route in your delivery plan.
UK recycling research boundaries
| Question | Evidence |
|---|---|
| What goes in? | Accepted scrap type and source |
| What comes out? | Recovered material or finished product |
| What can be purchased? | Qualified specification and commercial allocation |
Your review checklist
- Distinguish input capacity from product output.
- Check scrap collection and preparation.
- Retain application-specific qualification.
- Assess environmental claims on their own evidence.

Does UK recycling guarantee UK-origin scrap?
No. Collection geography and processing geography should be recorded separately.
Can recycled material replace primary supply immediately?
That depends on the product, process and customer approval. Recycling origin alone does not establish interchangeability.
