Investigate the conversion, not just the deposit
A project's geological scale can dominate a presentation while the processing route receives a short paragraph. For a supply decision, reverse that emphasis: what product leaves the mine, where is it treated and which separated products are actually produced? The constraint may sit between an abundant input and a qualified downstream requirement.
Solvay's La Rochelle announcement concerns a rare-earth production line for the magnet value chain. It is a useful reminder to identify the precise industrial capability added by a milestone rather than describing every expansion as new mine-to-magnet supply.

Test the receiving operation
Record the proposed processor, accepted feed, product scope and status. Ask whether the route is operating, under commissioning or still proposed. The ability to process one feed does not automatically prove acceptance of another source. Relevant technical compatibility and commercial access need confirmation.
Then check whether the downstream path is supported. Separated oxide capability can be important while leaving metal conversion, alloying or magnet manufacturing unresolved. A strong assessment identifies the specific bottleneck addressed and the next dependency remaining.
Illustrative diversification claim
A mine in a new country plans to send concentrate to the same processor used by existing suppliers. The project could diversify extraction while leaving processing concentration unchanged. State both findings. That gives the decision-maker a more useful account than either dismissing the project or describing it as complete independence.
Test the separation route
| Question | Evidence |
|---|---|
| Where is the feed processed? | Named receiving operation |
| What leaves the process? | Separated product and specification |
| Is the route established? | Operating disclosure and relevant agreement |
Your review checklist
- Identify the material entering separation.
- Verify the processor and product scope.
- Keep technical compatibility separate from commercial access.
- Trace the remaining downstream steps.
Investigate with Oreline
Use Oreline's stage-based facility research and disclosed routes to inspect where a project changes dependency and where it does not. That makes processing evidence central to the supplier or investment discussion.

Does local mining guarantee local separation?
No. The receiving processing operation must be identified separately.
Is separation the only possible bottleneck?
No. Metal conversion, alloying, magnet manufacture, qualification or allocation can also constrain the route relevant to your product.
