Turn the phrase into a process map
List the stages needed for the proposed final product and assign a named operation to each where evidence allows. Mark the operation's status and the product it produces. If a stage is outsourced, retain the partner and arrangement rather than treating the whole chain as internally controlled. If a site is not disclosed, leave the gap visible.
DOE's supply-chain assessment provides a process reference for the stages involved. A corporate claim of integration still needs project-specific evidence at each of those boundaries.

Check whether the stages work together
Owning several relevant assets does not prove that their outputs are compatible or that their capacities align. Investigate the intended feed route, timing, acceptance and downstream specification. The slowest or least-established step may constrain the usefulness of otherwise substantial upstream capacity.
Keep current and future integration separate. A group can have an operating mine and a planned magnet factory, making its integrated strategy credible enough to investigate without making the completed chain an operating fact. Date the claim and identify the milestones needed to change that assessment.
Illustrative integration review
A company owns a mine, has an agreement with a separator and plans a magnet plant. The research record should show three different kinds of evidence: owned extraction, an external commercial route and future manufacturing. Combining them into one 'fully integrated operating supplier' label would erase the execution and access questions.
Classify each stage
| Status | Research treatment |
|---|---|
| Owned and operating | Inspect achieved product and output |
| External partner | Verify arrangement and technical route |
| Planned capability | Track development and qualification milestones |
Your review checklist
- Assign capabilities to actual operations.
- Distinguish ownership from access.
- Check product compatibility and capacity balance.
- Keep future integration separate from present supply.

Does vertical ownership guarantee physical independence?
No. Owned facilities can still rely on external feedstock, conversion or services. The relevant route needs examination.
Can a partially integrated project be attractive?
It can be worth investigating. The useful task is to make the remaining dependencies explicit rather than treating the integration label as the decision.
