Extract the terms before the conclusion

Record the named parties, product, agreement date, intended start, duration and any disclosed volume or value. Preserve whether the announcement describes a signed agreement, an intention or a later amendment. A headline customer name can be important without answering every supply question.

GM's 2021 MP Materials announcement describes a long-term supply arrangement across several product stages. It is a dated source illustrating why the stated material and scope belong in the research record; current fulfilment requires subsequent evidence.

Separate commercial support from delivery readiness

A customer commitment may support a development thesis, but the project still needs the relevant operating route and qualification. Conversely, an established factory can have an agreement whose allocation to a particular customer is undisclosed. Do not convert a company-level deal into a facility flow without a named route and matching evidence.

Where a figure is monetary, retain it as value. Converting it into tonnes requires product, price and timing assumptions that may not be available. Where legal enforceability matters, have the actual terms reviewed by qualified advisers rather than interpreting a press-release label as a legal conclusion.

Illustrative allocation mistake

A company announces a major agreement but discloses no tonnage. The deal supports a commercial-relationship finding, not a calculation of uncommitted annual output. The next research task is to establish the product scope, milestones and any quantity disclosure, then connect that evidence to operating results.

Your review checklist

  • Read beyond the customer name.
  • Retain amendments and later progress disclosures.
  • Do not infer site allocation from a group agreement.
  • Keep legal interpretation separate from research extraction.

Frequently asked questions

Does an offtake announcement prove available supply for us?

No. It may indicate a commitment to another customer. Availability requires a product-specific allocation and current commercial confirmation.

Can a company-level agreement be recorded without a facility?

Yes. Keep it at the disclosed company scope rather than inventing the receiving or producing site.
