Understand what replaces conventional mining

Rainbow describes Phalaborwa as a project recovering rare earths from phosphogypsum stacks and identifies a hydrometallurgical route. Existing residue is a different starting material from freshly mined ore, but it still requires a defined path to saleable product.

Record the feed's origin, composition and physical condition. Ask what sampling establishes about variation across the material that would actually be processed. A project can avoid some conventional mining steps while introducing other questions about recovery, impurities and consistent feed preparation.

Follow each intended product separately

Where a flowsheet produces more than one output, identify which elements leave in each stream and at what processing stage. A separated product and a mixed intermediate should not be assigned the same downstream readiness. Commercial outlets, additional conversion and price assumptions can differ between them.

Study results also need their context. Preserve whether the evidence comes from laboratory work, a pilot or an operating commercial circuit. A credible technical programme can strengthen the case without proving that the full-scale plant has already demonstrated throughput, recovery and recurring customer acceptance.

Test the residue advantage properly

In an illustrative comparison, one route begins with previously processed residue and another with hard-rock ore. Compare the remaining processing steps, utilities, waste handling and saleable outputs rather than awarding the residue route an automatic low-risk label. The relevant question is which costly or uncertain activities are genuinely removed and which still determine execution.

Your review checklist

  • Identify the residue and its variability.
  • Keep each product stream separate.
  • Retain the scale of the test evidence.
  • Compare remaining obligations rather than mining labels.

Investigate with Oreline

Oreline places secondary-feedstock projects alongside other rare-earth routes with their underlying evidence. Use that context to investigate what Phalaborwa could contribute and which processing or development questions are decisive for your work.

Frequently asked questions

Is a waste-derived project the same as magnet recycling?

No. Industrial residue recovery and recycling finished magnets use different feedstocks and processing routes.

Does no conventional mine mean no execution risk?

No. Feed preparation, processing, utilities, environmental management and product qualification can still matter.
