Locate the actual transformation
Lynas describes mixed rare-earth carbonate from Kalgoorlie being further processed at its Malaysian plant. This is a useful example of an international route in which the extraction and conversion geographies differ.
For a Malaysian facility, identify the input and output before interpreting its role. The address alone will not tell you whether it handles mineral feed, mixed chemicals, separated oxides or downstream manufacturing. Preserve the site name as well as the corporate owner so nearby or affiliated activities are not conflated.
Separate upstream and downstream dependence
A processor can provide diversification from one separation location while relying on a particular overseas feed source. Investigate both sides of the facility. Several customer relationships may lead back to the same feed route, while one feed source may supply multiple products that should not be counted as independent tonnes.
Current operation also needs current evidence. Use dated production and regulatory disclosures relevant to the process being assessed. For a permit or licence question, consult the current official terms and qualified advisers; a company overview should not be used as a compliance opinion.
Ask the question the route exposes
In an illustrative review, a supplier names a Malaysian oxide processor but does not identify the metal maker used for the final magnet. You have resolved one stage, not the whole origin question. Request the next conversion site and product scope. Keeping that remaining gap visible is more useful than declaring the chain either fully independent or entirely unknown.
A processor-centred investigation
| Side of the plant | Research focus |
|---|---|
| Incoming material | Feed type, source and concentration |
| At the site | Processing scope and operating evidence |
| Outgoing material | Separated product and next conversion |
Your review checklist
- Identify the physical input and output.
- Trace both sides of the processor.
- Use current dated operating evidence.
- Keep regulatory interpretation separate from the route map.

Is Malaysian processing evidence of Malaysian mining?
No. Processing location and mine origin are different fields.
Does identifying the oxide processor complete a magnet trace?
No. Metal, alloy and magnet manufacturing stages may still need to be identified.
