Compare the same manufacturing job
A magnet maker's relevance depends on what you need it to deliver. Record the material family, magnetic requirements, geometry, coating, operating environment and required delivery form. A company producing powder or unfinished blanks is not necessarily performing the same job as one supplying a finished, tested component. Keep the technical requirement under engineering control.
DOE's magnet supply-chain assessment separates multiple conversion and manufacturing activities. A manufacturer comparison should preserve those distinctions rather than putting every magnet-related company in one interchangeable category.

Separate capability from availability
The ability to make a product does not establish room in the schedule for your order. Ask which line would produce it, what evidence supports the claimed output and what qualification or tooling work remains. Existing customer commitments can matter as much as the headline production figure.
Make the comparison auditable. Use a dated field for each conclusion and distinguish supplier statements from independently corroborated facts. A missing answer is a follow-up item, not a reason to award a middle score that implies acceptable performance.
Illustrative manufacturer comparison
Manufacturer A advertises a large annual capacity across several grades. Manufacturer B reports less total output but supplies the required product form. You cannot rank A first on tonnage alone. The next useful test is whether each can demonstrate the relevant process, acceptance criteria and available slot for your order. The shortlist should reflect that narrower question.
A product-specific comparison
| Dimension | Decision evidence |
|---|---|
| Product fit | Specification and qualification scope |
| Delivery capability | Relevant line, output period and open allocation |
| Supply resilience | Feedstock, conversion partners and backup route |
Your review checklist
- Compare like-for-like product forms.
- Confirm the producing facility rather than only the group.
- Keep stated capacity distinct from achieved output.
- Ask what changes would require requalification.

Is the largest manufacturer always the lowest-risk option?
No. Product fit, allocation and common upstream dependencies may matter more to your particular order than total group scale.
Does a sample prove repeatable production?
A sample is one milestone. Repeatability, acceptance and the qualified production process need separate evidence appropriate to the application.
